Summer Solstice 5K

Tonight was the Summer Solstice 5K/10K at Minto-Brown Park. I registered on a whim last week. I've been getting a little lazy, and felt the need to jump start some physical activity.

I set a goal for myself to walk the 5K in less than an hour due to the sitting on my butt the last few months. And I'm happy to say I did it, coming in just over 51 minutes which translates to less than 17 minutes/mile. Not too shabby. Of course I have blisters and my knee is screaming. So much fun. :)

How Old Am I?

I had a flattering day. It's kind of silly, but two different people made me feel younger than I am. The first was my wonderful stylist. He and I are the same age and today's topic during my haircut was high school reunions. We both have them this summer and Gene made the offhand comment that I seem so much younger than I actually am. The comment really took me by surprise, but it was flattering since some days I feel really, really old.

The second incident happened at the gym. I've been a bit of a stranger there over the last few months, which the trainer pointed out. I explained that school's out...finally. Her reply was "Are you a student?" Granted, it wasn't about my age, but it was still flattering on the heels of my earlier moment.

Graduation...Then & Now

Tonight I attended the graduation ceremony for the Class of 2011 and watched as several of my current and previous students walked across the stage to accept their diploma covers (yes, they are empty but that is another story). It's my third graduation for this district, and as I sat there watching I spent some time contemplating traditions, and comparing now to my graduation.

Then - Mortar board decorations were unique and very personal.
Now - Glitter was quite common this evening with most of the girls, but a majority of kids didn't decorate.

Then - Mr. Weimer made sure we all were appropriately attired. Shirts and ties for the guys and skirts and stockings for the girls. Nobody dared to violate the plan.
Now - Dress code is very relaxed. Shorts, jeans, flipflops...anything goes.

Then - Graduation was held outside on school grounds.
Now - Indoors and a rented site.

Then - Our procession was in alphabetical order.
Now - Choose your own walking partner.

I don't remember much about my high school graduation. There are some things that stand out, but I can't remember who spoke or what the message was. I'm tempted to dig out the old video and watch it before my reunion this summer.
